Mel’s Bakery Inc. sits comfortably at the corner of Dovercourt Road in Toronto, blending the straightforward charm of a neighbourhood bakery with the casual warmth of a local café. This spot appeals mainly to residents looking for reliable, unfussy bakery goods and quick sandwiches without the usual rush or hassle typical of busier city cafés.

As a bakery and café hybrid, Mel’s is best known for its bread products and deli-style sandwiches, with fresh, soft buns and generous portions. The atmosphere feels grounded in routine — a place where older locals and families from the area come through for a relaxed lunch or a quick coffee break. It doesn’t chase trends but offers a sort of comfort-food experience that fits what many in the community seek on an everyday basis.

The seating area is modest but warm, encouraging easy conversation over coffee and pastries. Visitors who appreciate straightforward service and a low-key vibe will find Mel’s easy to appreciate. On a typical weekday, the café isn’t overwhelmed by crowds, which makes it a good stop if you want somewhere to catch a breather or meet a friend without the noise of a busy downtown hangout.

Food-wise, Mel’s shines with classics like their custard tarts and simple sandwiches that lean into familiar flavours rather than culinary experiments. Their sandwiches, especially the veal and vegetable options, come in sizable portions with fresh, house-baked bread, making it a practical choice for a midday bite. While some items, like the Korean-inspired offerings, have mixed feedback, the main deli sandwiches and pastries tend to satisfy those looking for a down-to-earth, budget-friendly option. Coffee here pairs quietly well with the pastries, supporting the overall no-frills approach.

In short, Mel’s Bakery is a practical, everyday kind of place — suited to locals who want a comfortable spot for lunch or a sweet snack that relies on tried and true bakery staples. The best time to visit is during midday or early afternoon, when the crowd is lighter and the neighborhood’s pace feels unhurried. For those interested in supporting a longstanding family-run business with a straightforward menu and sincere service, Mel’s fits neatly into the fabric of Dovercourt Village life.

We ordered 5 tosta mistas and 5 custard tarts for the family, and various beverages. The price was very reasonable for lunch for five people, and the food was top notch. A lot of reviews indicate that the veal sandwich and their various Korean offerings are not up to snuff, and maybe one day I'll try these items and report back, but I also wouldn't go to a Korean restaurant and order their Portuguese chicken...

Good, cheap neighbourhood bakery. Fast service, never too busy. I enjoy their sandwiches.

Really cute and wholesome neighbourhood spot. It's the type of family business that you want to support. The atmosphere creates a great place to enjoy a coffee and have a good conversation. We tried 2 of their pastries, although I don't recall the names of either. One was similar to apple pie, and was quite good, while the other was a flaky pastry with custard in the middle and vanilla/chocolate icing on top. The latter was extremely hard and difficult to cut through, so that wasn't great. I'd guess that most of what they offer is much better than this though, so I'll probably come back again.

This is an old style bakery/deli serving mostly the older people in the neighborhood. Their bread products are great, their pizza is serviceable but their service is fantastic. Don't really care for any of their deserts, and I've tried most of them. Incredible deli sandwiches and worth the cost

Ordered a custom lemon cake for my mom's birthday and the baker did a great job. The cake was light, fluffy and tasty. Just wish there was someone else to help the lady at the counter, the waiting time is too long.
